Bittersweet!

I've been on cloud 9 this week to have been voted an Associate member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists - see those letters after my name on my Blog-header!

However, upon returning home from the West Country, I found that none of the five paintings I submitted for the ROI (the Royal Institute of Oil Painters) had been accepted for the annual exhibition.  So, it's been a little bittersweet, from floating on a great high, being recognised by one's peers, to landing back down on the ground on my backside by not making it through to the final cut of the next big society's show.  Ouch...ah well, as Fred Astaire sang, time to pick myself up, dust myself off and start all over again.  I was reminded today that when he made his first screen test, it was said that he "can't sing, can't act, balding, can dance a little", and he did alright...

A huge thanks to all of you who attended my exhibition at the Marine House Gallery in Beer in Devon last Saturday, especially those who bought a 'Barker' - your patronage is much appreciated. The exhibition continues until November 15th and can be viewed online by clicking this link:

We had a great few days in Devon and on into Cornwall, visiting glorious Bantham and Mousehole. Here's yours truly painting at Mousehole:

    Hello Peter,

I love your paintings and your comments as well. I notice that you have a quite interesting apparatus for your plein air painting.....it looks like a tripod + an attachment to hold the panel. Is this something you've created from 'parts of easels' or is it for sale somewhere. It looks a lot lighter than my usual set-up. I do have a Beauport, and love it...but a lighter weight would be a distinctly positive attribute.

    1. Thank you Frances! The panel holder I have is one made by James Coulter - not sure where you are in the world, but he is in the U.S. and the website link to copy and paste, is: http://artboxandpanel.com/works/496153/standard-and-compact-painting-panel-holder
It fits onto a standard tripod screw attachment - full details on the website. It is very lightweight and I also bought the standard painting palette which simply hooks onto the tripod in seconds and opens out to give a platform for brushes, palette, tubes, etc.. Hope that helps.

  4. I've been thinking about you...what a "high moment"...and then the disappointment. Don't dwell on the latter...but on the honor. You are a very good artist. Remember that!

    1. Ha ha, thanks Andrew! I might be similarly far from government as David was in truth! I'll keep trying though. Maybe I should go for coalition....
